UK TV - A Condensed History

Films began in the 1900's - silent movies that are black and white


First Film with Sound: 1927 - The Jazz Singer


1922 - British Broadcasting Company (BBC)


1926 - BBC = Corportion
       
           John Reith - Managing Director of the BBC


1936 - BBC TV Began


1939 - 1946 - TV was stopped by World War 2

                       Stopped in the middle of Mickey Mouse Cartoon
                       (Or Tom and Jerry as my Tutor could decide)
                       and when TV came back to live again it carried on
                       the cartoon like the war never happened
                       During this the radio was all everyone could listen to


1952 - Queen Elizabeth's Coronation - TV's Highlight that made
            history forever


1955 - Independent Television (ITV)

           On it's opening night the ratings were lowered due to the
           famous "fire" on the Archers on BBC Radio. People would
           say that would never happen in a million years - yet it did!!!!


1964 - BBC2


1969 - Colour TV began


1982 - Channel 4 began
            First ever show was Countdown


1983 - Breakfast TV began - remember the good ones....
           Big Breakfast, SMTV Live, Live & Kicking and so on....


1988/89 - Cable + Sky TV


1995 - Channel 5
