Music Video Task 1 - Video One

TINA TURNER - WHAT‘S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT?

I picked this video as it was one of the first music video I have ever watched. Tina Turner and Queen were the main music artists I listened to as a kid and still do even today as well as all kinds of music. I like any kind of music!

BACKGROUND

"What's Love Got To Do With It?" was the second single that was released from Tina Turner's fifth solo album Private Dancer. This song was originally written for Cliff Richard but was rejected and it was then offered to Donna Summer, who said that she sat with it for a couple of years but never recorded it. In the end it was Tina Turner who recorded the song and when it was released, it became known worldwide and still talked about ever since.

This song got three awards at the 1985 Grammy Awards: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. The song was added into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2012.

The music video for the song claimed a prize at the MTV Video Music Awards in 1985 for "Best Female Video".

The music video features Tina Turner walking down the street engaging with the public, intercut with scenes where she's singing directly to the viewers. It was shot in New York City during the summer of 1984. The music video also features Pamela Springsteen as a street dancer who is Bruce Springsteen’s sister.

PROMOTIONAL TOOL

This song was the song that really gave Tina Turner the comeback she was looking, she got awards for this and all her albums got sold a million times.

The video itself wasn’t just about giving Tina Turner and comeback, it was everything involved in the video so when people ask who is Tina Turner they will say two things: the voice and the hair!

When you first see the video, you get a good look at the city which is New York City and it's really for those who haven't yet seen the city for themselves and since it was filmed in the 80s, its also good to see how it was back then and see the difference between then and now. Looking into the streets you get a good look at anyone who lives there and see what was in fashion in the 80s. This would also be a big hit for those looking for the next best thing to wear. I say that the clothes that Tina was wearing, the denim jacket, black dress and black heels are in a way still in fashion today when adapted for the 21st century.

SYNERGY

The video reflects the singer but there is also the audience.

If there’s a question wherever or not the video could pulled off for today, the answer would be no for two reasons – one would be the clothes as they are very 80’s (the pattern vest, the hair styles). The second reason would be Tina only because in the she is about 40 something and today she is 72 which by the way she looks pretty good for her age and she doesn’t look like a woman in her 70s.

The video can't be pulled off for today because the twin towers were seen in the video and now the are no longer there because of the 9/11 attacks.

Back to when Russell Brand had the wild hair (now that it's tamed, it looks lame! I don't like the wavy locks look) – it reminded me of Tina Turner as her hair style is iconic that even some people today go for that look even if it’s adjust to todays’ style fashion.

The song title was also used for the film “What’s love got to do with it?” which is loosely based on Tina Turner’s life story although according to research they changed facts from Tina’s ACTUAL book about her life.

Like for example when Tina’s “friend” got Tina into Buddhism – it was actually more than one person that got Tina out of a bad spot in her life involving Ike Turner.

FAN REACTION/CRITICS RECEPTION
When it comes to research about what people thought of the music video at the time during the 80s, it’s tricky to find any instant reaction to the video from both critics and fans. However looking at YouTube – there are comments about the video that people mention wherever its about the video, the song or Tina Turner herself, It shows that even though the song was back in the 80s, it’s still remember to this day.

Some of the comments (And I print screen these on 1st October 2012) I found on YouTube as it shows......

These comments below was said about the music video itself and how the fans responded:

These comments below are about the artist herself, most are good but there are a few things that most weren't too sure of - mostly about her hair and make up as it follows:

These comments  below are about Tina Turner herself and it shows how that even though the song was born in the 80s, the younger generation still love it!

This comment as it shows someone from  the older generation who love the song so much that not do they want to go back in time but someone else agrees and wants to join in!

Looking at viewing ratings of this video, there is so far is 830,759 and this is from VEVO's YouTube page who are also associated with EMI music company, which makes the video very official.

AVAILABILTIY

Back to when I was younger (I was either listening to her or Queen) – the music videos were available on VHS video tapes and since the song was back in the 80’s there was still no such as CDs or DVDs or even YouTube.
However after looking on Amazon, I found that there are two DVDs: Tina Turner - Simply the Best: the Video Collection (2002) and the Best of Tina Turner – Celebrate! (2008) so even if the video is old, there are people who can re-master the video to give it a high quality that will sell even more better.

Now because the song is still talked about and if you don’t what the entire music video collection - you can find it on YouTube and from one of them there seems to be a link to download the video so you could watch it over and over without the internet. Most of the time as I research on how many website show the music video, there is also websites of the film “What’s love got to do with?” that seem to overtake it more than the video itself

  1. Goodness, I don't know where to start. Your writing needs some polish, like punctuation. You lack an ability to understand that something filmed at a particular time is a look at that time. So what if this video "couldn't be pulled off today?" It simply consists of Tina Turner singing to the camera intercut with street scenes. It would simply be filmed in modern day New York City anyway. The World Trade Center was there then, and it isn't there now. There is nothing to "pull off." What is your point in critiquing the video from a snooty modern perspective? It was a hit song with a popular video, so your petty attacks on everything from the clothing to the scenery are completely unfounded.
